Rafael Rangel
Venezuelan-American artist Rafael Rangel earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute in New York, where he graduated with honors in 2001. Shortly thereafter, he began working with Matthew Barney and in 2004 moved to Caracas, Venezuela. There he taught sculpture at the School of Arts at the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) before returning to the United States in 2014.
Rafael Rangel’s recent work opens up a new, more expressive dimension, with great formal freedom, a vibrant and energetic palette, and firm, thick brushstrokes of paint and charcoal. His paintings and sculptures create sections and accumulations of richly textured organic forms that, when intertwined with the paste of oil pastels, create accents of color.
